The 2003 Occasionals

Pre-July 30 - We decided to make a concerted effort for the Marylyn Ritchie Trophy this year, after losing out to Racoon Shack and the Mahaffey Family at the very end of the 2002 Series (in 2002 our record for the Sunset Series was nine 1sts, five 2nds, two 5ths, one 6th, one 7th, one 8th, two DNFs and one RAF [retired after finsihing]). Our preparation this year included a new spinnaker and replacement of a number of blocks, winches, etc. as well as refairing the rudder and new bottom paint. In the first fifteen races, we got eight 1sts, five 2nds and two 4ths. We have won the first two mini-series for PHRF B so have earned an invitation to the King of the Hill Regatta. We are leading the third mini-series for PHRF B with the last race due to be sailed on July 30th.

2003 Record - Lizzie B wins the Marylyn Ritchie for 2003!! After finishing 2nd at least twice in the last 10 years, Lizzie B finally is the overall winner in the Sunset Series Racing Division and wins the Marylyn Ritchie Trophy for 2003. It certainly wasn't easy and thanks go to everyone who sailed on the boat in 2003.
In addition to winning the overall trophy, we also made a clean sweep of the class trophies, winning all four of the mini-series for our class, PHRF-B (Final Results for Mini-Series #1, Final Results for Mini-Series #2, Final Results for Mini-Series #3, Final Results for Mini-Series #4). Our record for the 2003 season was ten 1sts, seven 2nds, three 4ths, one DNF and one ABN (abandoned).
The second and third place boats in the Marylyn Ritichie Trophy race were Bandit, a Santana 20, and 9 Lives, a Martin 242. You can find out more about Bandit at Bruce Fleck's website here. Bruce's site includes a link to a report of each night's race by the crew of Bandit. You should check it out. We are looking forward to sailing against Bandit and 9 Lives for the MR again in 2004.
King of the Hill - Now that the Sunset Series is officially over, we are looking forward to sailing in the King of the Hill Regatta again this year. The boats invited are the top boats from each class so it is a VERY competitive fleet. Last year we finished in about 9th place but only about 12 seconds behind the winner. Every one of the boats next to and in front of us was overlapped with the first boat to finish. What a gas! A list of the qualifying boats as of the end of the Sunset Series (September 10th) is provided here (note, if one or more of the qualifying boats decides not to attend the highest scoring non-qualifying boats in the MR scoring may be receive an invitation instead).
