Average Points per Race – Sunset Series |
The chart below shows the average points per race for the six top-scoring boats in the 2008 Sunset Series (average points on the vertical axis, race number on the horizontal axis). For each boat, the points plotted for each race represent the average of that boat's race scores through that race, ignoring the worst two scores. For example, the points shown for race #6 are the average of the boat's best four scores through race #6 and the points shown for race #15 are the average of the boat's best 13 scores through race #15.
Set forth below are comparable charts for the years 2002–2007. Note that 2008 is unique in that the winning average score was below 9.1 (and even below 8.5!) for the first time ever. 2008 is also somewhat unique in that each of the top four boats with three race scores (leftmost plotted point in each chart) did significantly worse as the season progressed. In four of the seven years (2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006), the boat that was leading with three race scores wound up winning and in one year (2007) the boat that was 2nd wound up winning. In that respect, the 2008 season was very different from other years.
