Area B 2008 Formula to Adjust Ratings

In adjusting our rating in April 2008, the Area B Handicap Review Board of SoCal PHRF decided that the following procedure was the appropriate method to use to determine the size of the adjustment. The same rationale will apply to all boats.

  1. Take all of the boat's results for one season.
  2. Take only those races where the boat won (ignore any results where the boat didn't win).
  3. Calculate the average margin of victory (the amount [sec/mi] by which the boat beat the 2nd-place boat) for races she won.
  4. Take the races where the "margin of victory" was greater than the average from step #3 and average the "margin of victory" for those races.
  5. Take the races where the "margin of victory" was less than the average from step #3 and average the "margin of victory" for those races.
  6. Take the two averages generated from steps #4 and #5 and average them.
  7. Take the result of step #6 and divide by two. Use this amount (rounded to closest multiple of 3) to adjust the boat's rating.

In the table below, in the first column we show the calculations for our boat for the 2007 season as reported by the local Area B Board (that is the amount by which they actually adjusted our rating). In subsequent columns, we show the calculations for other boats based on 2007 and 2008 results. Obviously, if our rating should be adjusted then by the same reasoning the ratings of other boats should be adjsted as well.
